The Regional Directorate of Technical Education, Kothamangalam serves as a key support mechanism for the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Kerala, to ensure and enhance the quality of technical education. It oversees the guidance, monitoring, and supervision of Government, Government-aided, cost-sharing, and self-financing institutions, including Polytechnic Colleges, Technical High Schools, Government Commercial Institutions, KGCE and KGTE institutions, Government Institutes of Fashion Design, Industrial Schools. The jurisdiction of the Regional Directorate extends across the districts of Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur.

The Audit Section is responsible for ensuring accountability and compliance in institutions by Conducting internal audits of Government Polytechnic Colleges, Technical High Schools, and Government Commercial Institutions, Preparing detailed audit reports under the leadership of the Senior Superintendent and submitting them to subordinate and superior offices, Reviewing enquiry and reply remarks promptly to facilitate effective communication and implement corrective actions, Performing surprise inspections at subordinate offices and institutions, with necessary instructions provided for improvements.

Direct Payment Section manages establishment-related matters for aided Engineering Colleges and Polytechnic Colleges under the direct payment scheme, including: Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, AlagappaNagar, Thrissur. Key responsibilities include processing and approving salary-related bills and other establishment matters for these institutions.

Academic Section plays a crucial role in maintaining the academic standards of institutions by, Conducting regular inspections and approvals for industrial schools offering KGCE, KGTE, and Fashion Design and Garment Technology courses, Investigating complaints from institutions across the state and handling special assignments from the Government, Approving industrial visits for students of Engineering Colleges in the 10 revenue districts of the northern and central regions of Kerala
